When it comes to selling your home, it’s important to remember that buyers WILL judge a book by its cover. This means that you should pay close attention to the way your home looks — including paint colors.
In the past, a completely neutral color palette was the thing that convinced buyers to buy. They were drawn to walls painted colors like beige, off-white, cream and more. However, a recent study by Zillow, claims that neutral tones may no longer be what nets sellers top dollar for their home. In fact, homeowners can meaningfully impact how many people look at their home and what buyers are ultimately willing to pay by choosing the right colors.
While every situation (and home) is different, it might pay to invest a little time and money in painting high impact areas of your home.
Paint colors that brought the highest prices.
Blue in the Kitchen and Dining Room
According to Zillow’s study, blue kitchens sold for $1,809 more than sellers expected. Blue was also a draw in the dining room — particularly when that blue is slate or gray in tone.
Light Blue in the Bathroom
Light blue bathrooms sold for $5,440 more than expected. The colors of blue ranged from light, pale blue to soft periwinkle.
Brown in the Living Room
Living rooms that were painted light shades of brown sold for $1,926 more than expected. The best colors included pale taupe and oatmeal.
Blue in the Bedroom
Blue is also a good choice for bedroom walls. The blues buyers like in bedrooms include darker shades — like cerulean. Homes with blue bedrooms sold for $1,856 more than anticipated.
Grey Exterior
Buyers seemed drawn to homes with grey or “greige” exteriors (a combination of grey and beige). Homes painted greige sold for $3,496 more than homes that were similar, but painted a different color.
Navy Blue Doors
Buyers paid more for homes that had navy blue doors. In fact, homes with blue doors sold for $1,514 more than those without.
What Wall Colors to Avoid in Your Home
Buyers are no longer looking for walls in a neutral palette, and paint colors can be just the thing to help you sell your home for the right price. But, you can’t just do anything to the walls in your home in order to make it sell higher. In fact, Zillow found that two things in particular turned off buyers: textured, terra-cotta dining room walls — and stark white bathrooms.
